I spin in a circle just as fast as I can
and for as long as I am able.
In the last ten minutes my multiple
layers of clothes one by one join in the spin.
Pretty soon one of my skirts will rise over my head
and, without losing a step,
I'll hold it like an umbrella before I flip it off.
Now while I juggle,
I'll spin another umbrella
and quickly crouch down so that
I'm twirling on the floor.
The music is hypnotizing me.
I think I can turn for another ten minutes.
I'm the best whirling dirvish among my Egyptian friends.
We're told that the longer we spin,
the closer we can get to God,
but spinning for tourists is also
a pretty decent job.
