China is a fascinating country, full of interesting places. One such place is Guangzhou where I encountered this old gate in the "old city". It wasn't a tourist attraction, just an old ignored part of the city. It was quiet and in my minds eye, I could imagine the old impenetrable gates slowly creaking open so hoards of people could rush through to their daily tasks.

This old gate symbolizes for me the magic of China, where the age of everything dwarfs what Americans can imagine. Sites and buildings are measured in milleniums not decades, or even generations. Like an old Chinese man, this gate was still serviceable, even though it was ignored and squeeky.
